BlackBerry Z10Blackberry Z10

BlackBerry Z10 is the first phone loaded with the brand new BlackBerry 10 OS. At first glance, it gives that clean and sleek look which we normally associate with the iPhone 5. The BB Z10 comes with a full touch experience. The build quality is excellent, especially the back which provides a comfortable grip. The best thing about Z10 is its simple, no-fuss look that sets it apart in a world full of glitzy and colourful smartphones dominated by Android. The product is aimed primarily at its traditional customer base- the business/corporate user.

Blackberry has finally geared up on its hardware department with the Z10, after years of being outmatched by its rivals. The Z10 comes with a Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. The Nokia Lumia 920 is packed with the same processor, albeit that has 1GB lesser RAM. This chipset brings the Adreno 225 graphics.

The Z10’s 4.2-inch display has a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. In comparison, the 4-inch display of the iPhone 5 has a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels. In the density stakes too, the Z10’s 355ppi is better than 326ppi on the iPhone 5.

BlackBerry Z10 comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of recording full-HD video. The overall image quality is pretty decent though not upto the mark of iPhone 5 and Lumia 920. In fact, the Z10 camera is a shade behind previous generation Android flagships, the Galaxy S III and the HTC One X.

Sony Xperia SP & Xperia L

Xperia L

Xperia L

Sony recently unveiled the latest addition to its Xperia smartphone line-up, the Xperia SP and Xperia L. The Xperia SP delivers 4G LTE performance and an exceptional viewing experience, with a razor sharp HD screen housed in a beautiful design. The Xperia L provides class leading camera technology with HDR for both photos and videos complemented by a high quality screen.

A dual-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, Adreno 320 GPU along with 1GB of RAM power the Xperia SP. It has a 4.6-inch TFT display with the BRAVIA Engine 2, delivering a 1280×720 pixel resolution. The screen has Corning Gorilla Glass, scratch resistant, and supports 10-point multi-touch. Just like the Lumia 920, it also supports glove mode.

Xperia SP

The rear of the Xperia SP has an 8MP shooter with 1080p HD video recording, and the front has a 0.3MP camera. The Xperia SP is slim at 9.98mm thickness and weighs a mere 155 grams. It supports 8GB built-in storage expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card. It also supports 3G, Wi-Fi, microUSB, Bluetooth 4.0 and DLNA. A 2,370mAh battery powers the Xperia SP.

The Xperia L is a slightly smaller version of the Xperia SP, featuring a 4.3-inch screen with an 854×480 pixel resolution. It also has a slightly slower 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8230 Snapdragon processor with no word on the RAM. Even the GPU gets a downgrade when compared to the Xperia SP (Adreno 305 vs. Adreno 320). While Sony may have given the Xperia L slightly less power under the hood, it hasn’t skimped out on the imaging part as the L features an 8MP camera with an Exmor RS sensor that is essentially a BSI sensor.

HTC One

HTC One

HTC One

HTC has launched their latest Android flagship device, the HTC One, in India for ₹42,990. The phone is expected to go on sale towards the end of this month. HTC has tied up with Reliance Communications to offer 1GB of free 3G data for three months to those who purchase the One.

The most striking feature about One is its sleek design comprising an all aluminium and glass body and the Sense UI 5.0. The HTC One is a big phone, but it’s also very light. At 143 grams in weight and 9.3 mm in thickness, the One may not be as light or slim as either the iPhone 5 or the Galaxy S4, but its weight or thickness never pops up as an issue.

Overall usability on the HTC One is very good. Touch response is fantastic across the board and we didn’t notice any slowdowns even when running multiple apps at once. The virtual keyboard is huge and responsive but strangely, it didn’t feel very conducive to fast typing. While using the keyboard, the response felt sticky at times, with the alphabet appearing a tad late after its key was pressed.

HTC has done a complete overhaul by replacing the traditional Android UI with the  Sense UI 5.0. It includes the HTC BlinkFeed™  widget which is a live home screen. With HTC BlinkFeed™, you can simply pick the social networks, news and feeds that you want to stay updated on and they’ll all stream live to your home screen.

Among the other key features include HTC Zoe™ and HTC BoomSound™. The HTC Zoe allows you to capture both photos and a short video at the same time. Tapping on the Zoe option in the camera and then clicking a photo records a couple of seconds of video including a few seconds before you actually clicked the photo. You can also select a particular frame from the video you shot and save it as an individual image. Additionally, you can share the video, along with other photos as an album that can be uploaded using the HTC Share service, on HTC’s site. While uploading a Zoe album, you can also add music to the photos and edit the photos.
