Looking through the innocent eyes the child begins to discover the wonderful world to be lived in. Gradually it grows up to become a great citizen. But it is very unfortunate that as we grow into adulthood we tend to lose that innocence and simplicity. Childhood is the phase where one seems to be jovial, always in a cheerful mood, and a mind full of positivity with no bitterness in head and heart… But the life changes when one enters into the Teen-town, the most critical stage in life.
Teenage is that chapter of our life where we should be scrupulous in everything we do. Entering into this stage, our body, mind as well as our heart started experiencing some rapid changes which we can’t imagine of and respond to it so easily. That, as we go through this stage, everything changes…physically, mentally, socially, and most of all, emotionally.
Meeting to changes is obvious in life. Changes that will make our character stand above all. What we do now will lay the foundation for our state in the near future. For a crucial period called adolescence, one must try to make this the exciting, enjoyable, and memorable times in one’s life. As a teenager, one is in that enviable stage where everything is positioned to go one’s own way. When you are young, full of energy, you feel like you are invincible, totally carefree and more independent.
However, most of the time, these nature of teenagers lead to various negative consequences and seems to take a dark turn, especially when underage alcohol is involved. Consumption of alcohol gives some short of psychological pleasure to those who seek its company for various reasons. Teenage is the stage where one tends to be more attracted towards such unwanted habits. Annually, thousands and thousands of people under age of 21 die from injuries involving underage drinking and driving. Intake of alcohol and make it as an addiction results in altering the structure and function of the developing brain. For most of the teens alcohol acts as a magic bullet where one can’t live without once it touch its taste bud. They can be compared to the fish without water when they do not get a frequent dose of it. And by the time when one step into the matured stage of their life it becomes impossible to rectify or go off from the addiction of alcohol.
Well, the most common cause for such negative habit prevalent among the teens is the peer pressure. Various studies done across the world have also proved that the single greatest factor in whether a teen decides to use alcohol is pressure from friends. Adopting it as a habit a person in their very early age started getting involved in many anti-social activities. And at the same time they might get involved into brutal crimes like rape, murder, dacoit, etc. And by the time they tend to realise, it becomes too late.
Teenage is an age where one for the first time could feel a soft breeze blew around, bringing the feeling of attraction for the opposite sex. One starts flying high, building castles of dreams in the paradise as one can feel it in their heart and soul. They stated experiencing a magical feeling, named it as ‘LOVE’ where they go crazy. Though they could not drive and control their instincts in a right way the painful feeling of betrayal could create great havoc in their life. To overcome from this intolerable pain one takes the company of opium. A single peg helps them to drown the sorrows and griefs of their broken heart. Likewise, in various circumstances, teenagers are tempted to the addiction of alcoholic beverages.
This evil habit of drinking was prevalent since from the Vedic and post- Vedic periods. Even at that time the drinking habit of wine was popular. Many a time our great philosophers criticised such habits saying wine as “unfit to be drunk, unfit to be given and unfit to be accepted”. According to Manu Smriti, also known as Manava-Dharmasastra, drinking wine was among the five mortal sins which merited the severest punishment.
Various studies are carried out regarding alcohol intake among the teenagers, where most of the time the studies says that there has been a rapid growth over the years in consumption of alcohol. The study, by the Social Development Foundation of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), says that 45% of intermediate students in metropolitan cities consume alcohol excessively, at least five to six times a month. Then again a survey carried out by the Community against Drunken Driving on 1,000 youngsters in Delhi, a third of 16-18 year olds drink at pub and bars. For most of the teenagers drinking and going to the bar or a pub is a normal thing and is a part of a materialistic life. Today’s teenagers are so much into the materialistic life that they enjoy being in the rich and luxurious world of their dreamland. Well, being materialistic is nothing wrong as long as the desire for material goods doesn’t control us and our action. Materialism becomes an obstacle when we start allowing things to control us, to keep us focused on things outside ourselves rather than on things that would be truly beneficial to us. This habit of alcohol consumption among the teenagers could be the consequences of so called exposure of a child to the television world where they try to produce positivity in every negative or sinful act. Alcohol advertising in media contributes to increase drinking among teenagers. Beside peer pressure and other issues that contribute towards the underage drinking, one of the most influential cause for liquor consumption among teens is exposure of drinking habit and the way it portrays at various mediums like TV shows, movies, mainstreams music and most of the commercial ads. Infact many a time it has been confirmed by the means of various studies that exposure of media depiction of alcohol at a larger dimension has an objectionable impression among the teens regarding on drinking behaviour. Even, most of the movies and commercials convey drinking behaviours as an integral part of a so called sophisticated high society culture and thus adopting this vary culture one is able to stand along with this society where they are idolized and admired. Consumption of liquor is portrayed in such an explicit way where people are seen to be drinking at any public gatherings be it a party, marriage ceremony or any kind of festivals and functions. Many a time it used to demonstrate that a peg of wine help one to indulge in romance and also act as a medicine when one comes after of an exhausted day.
Thus, in the modern day world, alcohol is extensively accessible and sturdily over-hyped throughout the society. For many people in society, consumption of alcohol has become a custom indeed that persist to be glanced as an ordinal part of development. There infact, is a widespread fallacy concerning the effects of alcohol on the human system. For most of the people, intake of alcohol is a risk free or a safe intoxicant but the fact that the medical research has revealed is that spirituous liquors lead to various health concern factors like shock and collapse in human body, lessen nerve sensitivity and muscle power, hinder digestion, cause paralysis, chronic diseases like gastritis, nutritional deficiency and cirrhosis of liver and have much to do with cancer and certain diseases of the head and heart. For this, effort needs to be made from both the sides for an effective result. This modern world possess everything in entirety for the well being of the mankind, thus, the web of complexities that a child weaves could be demolished by consulting with a concern physician rather than keeping them unnoticed from the eye of people.
